What Makes Our School Unique?
Mt. View has a variety of special musical and arts programs that enhance student vocabulary and confidence. Mt. View is also home to the only Tae Kwon Do program in an elementary school in the state of Tennessee. In 2009, 23 students earned a first degree black belt. The Renaissance Kids, a special musical group composed of recorder players in Grades 3-4, have performed at National Educational Conferences, the Renaissance Fair, Vanderbilt University and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Band Guitars and chorus (Grades 2-5) are all special offerings for students at Mt. View. Research indicates that students who are engaged in special programs enjoy school and feel a connection to the school community. These positive experiences will continue to have a positive effect on achievement. Parent survey results indicate that parents appreciate the opportunity to see their children perform.
In our academic programs, Mt. View is also incorporating strategies to include special populations more fully into the general curriculum. We are assisted by a numeracy coach and reading specialist. Math Explorers is also offered to higher performing students in Grades 3-5. Ross Bryan Associates, Inc., with support from Hands on Nashville, funded and built a unique math garden for use by our students to provide real opportunities for hands-on math.
Mt. View has the only chapter of the National Honor Society for Elementary Schools in Tennessee with a membership of 57 fourth and fifth graders.
Mt. View won a grant from the Titans & NFL Play 60, which promotes fitness. This program will enable the P.E. Department to provide a variety of equipment and programs designed to promote fitness for all students.
