Tennessee’s adoption of more rigorous standards and assessments was a critical step in improving the quality of education for all of Tennessee’s students, but in order to be successful it requires an investment in teacher preparation. The Race to the Top funds for Standards & Assessments go directly to teachers, and instructional leaders who work with teachers, to provide effective professional development to ensure teacher preparation and training for academic instruction based on Tennessee’s new, rigorous standards, and the upcoming transition to the national Common Core Standards. The funds promote innovative methods of delivering professional development that are job-embedded, continuously improving and targeted to the needs of teachers and schools.
